Bathroom waterproofing- reliable solutions from Steigner

Do you plan on bathroom renovation as one of your New Year’s resolutions? Remember that in addition to whats on the surface, what is hidden is also important. Bathroom waterproofing is the key to a shower free from fungi, mold or flooding.

Why is bathroom waterproofing so important?

Bathroom is a place constantly exposed to water in all of its forms, therefore it’s important to take appropriate precautions when building or renovating. If water penetrates unprotected surfaces through the grout and underneath the tiles, it may damage the surface that’s there. Lack of proper hydro-isolation of a bathroom can lead to moisture and fungus on walls or floor. And then we will have to renovate again … That’s why, in order to avoid additional costs and nerves, make sure that when building or renovating a bathroom, you use materials of good quality that you can rely on. Bathroom waterproofing should come from a single manufacturer – this gives 100% guarantee that the products are matched properly.

Bathroom waterproofing  should cover the entire bathing zone: the shower or bathtub and the area around the sink. However, it is worth to protect all surfaces to reduce the risk of fungal growth.

How to waterproof a bathroom?

Before we start applying waterproofing, we need to prepare the surface. The work area should be dusted and cleaned, degreased and properly dried.  Then, a primer from Steigner should be applied. It normalizes absorbability of the surface and increases the adhesion of next layer.

Then, we secure everything with corners and tapes. This is where we use Steigner’s sealing corners, pipe collars and waterproof sealing tape. All of this is embedded in liquid rubber. Apply a layer of it to the entire surface with a brush or a roller.

Just before the coat dries completely, apply a waterproof sealing membrane to it and press it down. The entirety is then secured with a layer of liquid rubber again. It has to dry at least 24 hours. Secured in this way surface is then ready to be covered with tiles.

Results of poor bathroom waterproofing

Proper bathroom waterproofing is extremely important. Fissures in the construction and failure to allow the entirety to dry properly, would be counterproductive – the grout will crumble, the tiles will not stick to the surface, mold and fungi will appear. Therefore, make sure to follow through with the instructions: do not shorten drying time of the materials.

What is the secret to appropriate waterproofing materials for bathroom security? It is in their properties. Sealing corners, tapes and sealing mat are made of polyethylene fibers that are resistant to water as well as tearing. It doesn’t age, therefore polyethylene effectively protects walls and floor from moisture. After drying, liquid rubber creates a completely waterproof coating. The primer improves the absorbability of the surface and its adhesion. As a result, the subsequent sealing layers stick together better. In order for hydro-isolation to be efficient, all materials presented must be included in the process of bathroom waterproofing.

In our online store on Amazon you will find all the aforementioned Steigner products necessary to effectively hydro-isolate a bathroom.
